Two people seriously injured in weekend crash west of Springfield

Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash just west of Springfield Saturday night.

According to reports from Illinois State Police District 9, the crash occurred at the junction of Illinois Route 97 and 125 near Farmingdale shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday.

A press release from Illinois State Police District 9 says a green 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling eastbound on Illinois Route 97 near the intersection of Routes 97 and 125 when the crash occurred. At the same time, a black 2003 Honda Accord was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 97.

Authorities say the two vehicles experienced a near head-on collision on the roadway, resulting in both drivers being seriously injured and causing the highway to be closed for approximately two hours Saturday night.

According to the state police, both drivers were reported to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, and both were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The names of both drivers are currently being withheld at this time, according to Illinois State Police.

The driver of the green 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was cited for improper lane usage.
