The Waverly Fire Chief is informing the public of two events happening in the city on Saturday.
The Waverly Fire Department and Rescue Squad will hold the third “Tour de Trauma Bike Ride”, to raise funds for first responders. Fire Chief Glen Brown says this is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the fire department.
“We are having bikers from as far as Chicago and St. Louis to ride our routes. The ride is up to 65 miles if they choose to ride that far. It starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 2 in the afternoon.”
The ride starts at Waverly Fire house, runs through country roads in Franklin, Modesto, Scottville, Palmyra and back to the fire house.
Registration for the ride is $25.
Later in the night, the Illinois Fire Service Institute will be training local fire departments on how to handle propane burns.
Brown stressed that first responders should have a strong knowledge of the dangers of propane and propane accessories. This training includes a live demonstration for fire crews to handle.
“They will ignite a propane tank with propane that will be shooting from 20 to 60 feet in the air. We will have hoses and keeping the values cool. The person in the middle will work his way up to shut the valve off and control the fire.”
The demonstration starts at 6 p.m.
