West Central Illinois honors vets on Memorial Day

The Jacksonville Lions Club will be placing flags around Community Park starting at 7 a.m. To assist putting up or taking down flags contact Dale Shafer at 248-0779.

American Legion Post 279 is hosting a service at Community Park today at 11 a.m.

Pastor John McCorkle will lead a prayer with Commander Jerry Byal, the Officer of the Day. Retired First Sargent Joe Wolfe has been selected as the keynote speaker.

Other Memorial Day services in the area will be at Bower Cemetery at 9 a.m., Winchester City Cemetery at 10 a.m., Glasgow City Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and the Alsey Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m.

If you are looking for something to eat, a Memorial Day Dinner will be served at the Alsey Memorial. The menu includes pulled pork, hot dogs and potato salad. Proceeds from the event will go towards the upkeep of the Alsey School Building.

In Franklin, the American Legion Post 1089 and auxiliary women will host a luncheon at 10:30 a.m. at the park. There will be a march to the Franklin City Cemetery to honor local military veterans.
