A Yale University professor is visiting the Illinois College campus on Thursday.

Professor of Spanish Rolena Adorno will speak during the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program.

Adorno, an expert in Latin American literature from the Spanish colonial period, will discuss “What Columbus Day Means Now, Or Why Hispanic Heritage Month Matters.”

She has written multiple books exploring the uneasy encounters between Spanish and American cultures, as well as the debates about the rights of conquest and colonization.

Appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, Adorno serves on the National Council on the Humanities.

The event, starting at 7 p.m. in the Kirby Learning Center, is free to the public.
