1 Deceased in Auburn Dump Truck Crash

One woman has died and another injured after being struck by a dump truck in Auburn today. At approximately 11:22 this morning, a dump truck crashed into the Casey’s General Store gas station in the 800 block of Lincoln Street in Auburn. In the process of striking the building, it struck two unidentified pedestrians.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said a female pedestrian was struck by the truck and was pronounced deceased at 12:45PM. The victim’s autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning. She has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.

Another victim was taken to an area hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. The Illinois State Police District 9 office is investigating the cause of the crash. The crash caused an undetermined amount of damage to the building. This story is developing. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

According to preliminary Illinois State Police investigations, an Auburn Township-owned 2015 International Dump Truck driven by 43 year old Bennie L Jackson of Auburn failed to negotiate a curve on Illinois Route 4 in the 800 block of Lincoln Street in Auburn at 11:29AM. The truck drove through a ditch, passed over Lincoln Street, and landed in a Casey’s General Store parking lot, striking the female pedestrian who was out of her vehicle. She was later pronounced deceased by Sangamon County Corner Jim Allmon at 12:45PM.

UPDATE 5/5/2020 11:45AM:

The Sangamon County Coroner’s Office has identified the individual that died in the incident at Casey’s Store in Auburn yesterday. Obaidah Gresham, 62, of Auburn was pronounced dead at 12:45pm by Coroner Jim Allmon, at Casey’s on Lincoln Street in Auburn. Gresham was a pedestrian that was struck by a dump truck in the parking lot. Autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
