School district looking into apparent property tax error

A decades-old tax error appears to have given property taxes from Winchester School District to Triopia School District.

According to a report from the Jacksonville Journal-Courier, the error, discovered last fall by a Winchester administrative assistant who was doing property research for a family who was considering moving into the area, has translated into about a loss of one-thousand dollars annually since 1980.

Winchester Superintendent Dave Roberts tells the newspaper he’s working with Scott County officials to find out exactly how much Triopia erroneously received in tax money, but that he doesn’t think Triopia should have to pay it back.

Roberts told the paper that Winchester could be paid back through a county insurance policy.
