Sheriff Rob McMillen says the sheriff’s department applied for a grant to get a dog last year, but was unsuccessful. This year, the grant application was approved to the tune of about $70,000. That will fund the purchase of the dog, a specialized squad vehicle, and appropriate equipment.
McMillen says Deputy Rob Hawk will be the dog’s handler. He says it’ll be a good addition to the only other K-9 unit in the county, which is with the Roodhouse Police Department:
Officials will travel to a dog kennel in Indiana next week to make a selection. He expects the K-9 to be in service within two to three months.
