Jacksonville’s homeless shelter was one of eight organizations on Monday to receive a surprise donation from Blue Cross Blue Shield.

The $5,000 gift to New Directions Heating and Cooling Center comes on Blue Cross Blue Shield’s 80th anniversary says spokesperson Colleen Miller.

“Our president asked employees in offices all around the state to nominate organizations that are making a difference in their local communities. New Directions was nominated for a surprise anniversary grant.”

A group of employees showed up at the facility to present the check, which Miller hopes makes a big difference in the community.

“This organization is really making a difference and they wanted to honor them with this surprise money, that they could use to enhance the lives of people that live in that area,” says Miller.

Organizations in Springfield, Rockford, Quincy, Mattoon, Marion, Danville and East St. Louis also received grants.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is asking employees around the state to volunteer for 80 hours during the “80 for 80 Summer of Service Program.”
