A small gathering was held at South Jacksonville’s Village Hall this morning to honor the life of a police officer killed in an accident over the weekend.

Scot Fitzgerald was responding to a medical call in Morgan County Friday night when his squad car was hit by an ambulance while he was making a U-turn in an attempt to find the residence, according to reports.

With family, friends and members of the community in attendance, a message on behalf of the South Jacksonville Police Department was delivered by village resident and former law enforcement officer Pat Staples.

Staples also shared a letter written by Scot’s wife, Dani.

Services for Fitzgerald will be held Wednesday at First Christian Church in South Jacksonville, with interment at Murrayville City Cemetery. Visitation will be tomorrow from 2-7 p.m. at the church.
