Howl-O-Ween Gives Kids a Spooky Organ Lesson and Treats at Lovejoy Hall Tonight

Trick or Treaters can get out of the cold for a bit tonight at Lovejoy Hall, for a fun and educational event, hosted by a real wolf….sort of.

The Howl-O-Ween show is a free Special Halloween musical lesson for kids featuring Scotty Jethro DeWolf.

Kids young and old are invited to enjoy a 10-15 mini organ concert, and some explanations about the musical features of the instruments.

Scotty Jethro DeWolf, who purchased Lovejoy Hall in an effort to save the historic church building, and preserve it as a community music, performance and education space, will be showing attendees the three different organs at the hall, how they work and give them a short concert of Halloween organ music.

DeWolf is going to get into the Halloween spirit, complete with a costume inspired by his own name.

On Halloween we are going to have a free event for all the kids and families to come in to Lovejoy Hall. I’ll put on a wolf mask and a wolf tail and play the organ like a warewolf. Maybe howl a little bit like a wolf on the spooky pipe organ, and show the kids what a pipe organ is all about. We will show inside and let them see where all the pipes are.

It will be like an encounter with the organs, because we have three different organs on the stage. Then we will look at the theater organ and show them what it was like to be a kid in 1925 and go to the moves when they were only a nickel to get in, and see how you had to read the captions and listen to the music. Then they will get to see all the different sound effects from boat whistles, to steam whistles, castanets and tambourines and drums, all of it.”

Lovejoy Hall features an Allen Custom 4 Manual George Wright Theater Organ, a
Hammond B-3 organ with twin Leslie Speakers, and the original church pipe organ.

DeWolf said that one of the organs in particular that will be played this evening, has some special significance.

Our fabulous Allen 4 Manual George Wright Theater Organ that is a virtual duplication of the organ in the St. Louis Fox theater, which is a 1925 and one of the four largest Wurlitzers ever made, and this is the digital equivalent of that.”

DeWolf said that he will be in trouble with the kids, but in the good graces of the parents, as they will also have a treat for your little trickster as you go on your way for Trick or Treating in town.

DeWolf said that because of the overabundance of candy on Halloween, that he will be offering fresh organic fruit for the kids that attend this evening.

Howl-O-Ween will be held at Lovejoy Hall, located at 520 W. College Avenue. The event will run in approximately half hour intervals from 5:30 to 7:00 pm this evening.
