Toronto Road in Springfield Closed After State Trooper Shot During Altercation With Alleged Chicago Murder Suspect

UPDATE 5:57AM : Toronto Road has reopened to traffic.

According to Springfield Leaks, Santana was apprehended in the 1200 block of Toronto Road at Circle K just before 2AM. Police had received information that someone had gone to the Days Inn, located at 5970 South Sixth Street Frontage Rd East, to inquire about a flashlight. Officers then responded to the area and took Santana into custody.

The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the west end of Springfield, in which a trooper was shot in the leg.

According to a report by the Illinois State Police, an ISP trooper interacted with 37-year old Cristobal Santana of Chicago in the 1600 block of Toronto Road just before 11 o’clock last night. Santana was believed to be wanted in connection to the shooting death of 37-year old Adrianna Lopez in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood from this past Sunday. According to reports, Santana is believed to have been Lopez’s ex-boyfriend. Lopez was reportedly shot multiple times while out walking on Chicago’s west side and was transported to an area hospital on the west side of Chicago and was later pronounced deceased.

According to Illinois State Police reports, during the interaction between the trooper and Santana gunshots were fired and the Trooper was struck in the leg. The shots fired incident was called in by a bystander to the shooting. A tourniquet was placed on the officer’s leg until first responders arrived. Santana fled his vehicle on foot, but was taken into custody at 1:58 a.m., according to the State Police. No other officers were injured. Toronto Road is closed from Cotton Hill Road to Horseview Drive for an extended and unknown period of time and drivers will need to seek a different route. ISP is investigating the shooting. The investigation is in its infancy and no additional information is available at this time. ISP will provide updates as more information becomes available.
