Cherry Apartments coming down soon

The fire gutted apartment complex on West State may be coming down soon.

Jacksonville mayor Andy Ezard says Jaren Industries were hired for the project, at a cost of about $350-thousand.

The city has pursued all the legal angles, and made it through the hoops. Ezard says the building will come down.

But, he says Jaren Industries is trying to find the cheapest way to do the project to save the city money.

He says planners are searching for the least expensive way for disposal of the building, while still following state law.

The Cherry Apartment building was abandoned when it caught fire January 15th. Its gutted remains have been an eyesore in the neighborhood, and danger to nearby properties, particularly the county building next door to the east.

Morgan County has not been able to use the building since the fire. It will house probation and other services.

Ezard fears the city will need to pay the entire bill.

He says there is a grant money but the city would need to delay the building razing. Ezard says he won’t do it.

No one was hurt in the fire. It has been investigated as a possible arson, but no finding has been released, and no arrests have been made.
