The Greenfield Police Department is asking for the public’s help after repeated acts of vandalism at the public restrooms at Greenfield Lake.

In a letter released June 15, Police Chief Nathanial Alderfer says juveniles have intentionally damaged the facilities over the past several months by dumping rocks and pebbles into toilets, causing severe plumbing blockages that could result in thousands of dollars in repairs. Alderfer also says there have been multiple incidents of fecal matter being smeared on restroom walls, creating what he called a serious biohazard for city workers, volunteers and the public.

The police department says it is actively investigating the incidents and will increase patrols around the lake. Alderfer is also asking parents to speak with their children about respecting public property and encouraging anyone with information about suspicious activity to contact the Greenfield Police Department’s non-emergency dispatch line at 217-942-6901.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Two Rivers Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-300-2590 or by sending a message through the organization’s Facebook page.

The chief warned that juveniles caught damaging city property could face criminal mischief charges, and parents may also be held financially responsible for restitution costs.

Following the department’s Facebook post, several community members suggested the city consider installing security cameras near the restroom facilities to help identify those responsible for the vandalism.

Alderfer says the department’s goal is not simply to punish those responsible, but to protect one of Greenfield’s most popular public recreation areas and keep it safe and clean for everyone.
