Tough Sell for Winchester Gym Referendum?

Winchester school superintendent Jeff Abell is unsure how the voters will respond to a bond referendum on the November ballot.

The Winchester school board is asking voters to approve an $8 and a half million bond referendum for a new grade school gym.

This would replace the long time home for high school basketball and volleyball. That gym was dropped this past week because of a sagging roof.

Abell was not at Winchester schools when the last referendum was defeated a couple of years ago. He says this is different, because the gym is gone.

He says one can make arguments about improvements to a building, but when a school loses its gym, something needs to be done.

Abell says the new proposed gym has a bigger footprint.

But, he says it is not an arena. He says there will be more seats, a better buffer area for the cafeteria, and improved locker room.

Abell says the new gym would be attached to the cafeteria, as was the former gym. He says they also plan to attached the new gym to the Kerr Ballard Legacy Center multi purpose building.
