A group of central Illinois dentists will honor the birthday of one of the fathers of modern dentistry at the end of July.
The celebration for Dr Greene Vardiman Black will be held July 31st at Hamilton’s. This is the celebration of Black’s 190th birthday.
Local dentist Dr William Weller says Black, who lived on Main Street in Winchester, brought dentistry into the medical community.
He says dentists before could be a barber with a side gig.
Weller says Dr Black developed the fillings that many dentists still use.
He says Black did this by testing differing versions of the filling for 13 years, and then gave the formula away for free.
Tickets are $40 for the prime rib dinner at the program, that begins at 5 PM with a cash bar at Hamilton’s on the final Friday of July.
In addition, the Jacksonville Museum is featuring a new exhibit featuring GV Black.
