The Winchester City Council has rejected a request to allow earlier Sunday liquor sales.

River County News reports Tim and Lauri Mason, owners of Rosie’s Diner and B.J.’s Diner in Winchester, asked the council to allow on-premises alcohol sales before the current 1 p.m. Sunday start time, citing interest in a Bloody Mary and mimosa bar at the former bowling alley location.

The request drew opposition from Alderman Jeff Pittman and Mayor Rex McIntire, who cited the city’s longstanding policy of prohibiting Sunday liquor sales during church worship hours.

The council voted to deny the request, meaning liquor sales in Winchester will continue from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. on Sundays.

The council did unanimously approve the Masons’ request to change one Class E liquor license to a Class A license, allowing package liquor sales.
