The Festival of Lights appears to be coming downtown.
The display is the idea of WJIL-WJVO, and has been at the Morgan County fairgrounds since it was first put up several years ago.
Jacksonville mayor Andy Ezard presented the idea of bringing it downtown to the Jacksonville city council tonight.
Ezard says it would be a boon downtown, because it would be free to the public.
Ezard says the lights will be set up within the square and it will be a walk through.
WJIL-WJVO owner Sarah Shellhammer says the cost to put on the lights runs about $120-thousand a year at the fairgrounds, and she thinks the cost will drop to less than $50-thousand with the move downtown. She says the fees charged by the lighting contractor were high and unsustainable, making it cost prohibitive.
The idea is welcomed by Jacksonville Main Street director Judy Tighe.
The council approved a uniform agreement, not a software agreement with Cintas. The clerk handles uniforms for city workers.
Meredosia will claim, for free, police department special response team ballistic helmets. City police say the older helmets were replaced, and sitting on a shelf.
And, the council approved paperwork for 10 year old funding from the state for approach work on South Main to the square.
