Morgan County Board Looks at County Separation Today

A rare mid week county board meeting this morning includes a proposed advisory referendum on the fall ballot.

The board will meet at 9 this morning at the Morgan County courthouse.

A group has circulated a petition to place a question on the ballot about Morgan, County separating from Cook County.

If the board concurs, Morgan County voters will have a question on the ballot concerning the proposal.

It is non binding, though several other counties in Illinois have voted in favor of either joining another state or forming their own state. Thirty three have passed the referendum, including Greene and Calhoun counties in this area.

The group here does not propose to join another state, but to form its own state.

It is a two referendum process, needing a second to formulate a plan.

But, the Illinois legislature and Congress would need to approve the move, which is highly unlikely.
