Two Morgan County groups are pushing for a November referendum that would impose restrictions on the construction of data centers in the county.
One group is called Accountability for Data Center Development, and the other is Indivisible-Jacksonville.
In a press release, the groups say they are concerned about the local expansion of a data center on the Sangamon Morgan County Line. That project was given the green light by the Sangamon County board.
The groups are looking for people to sign a petition for a referendum in November.
The press release indicates the ballot question would ask to have Morgan County voters use their voices to let commissioners know how they feel prior to any data centers being built in the county. The question is..Should there be restrictions imposed on the construction of data centers in Morgan County?
The groups wanted a 12 month moratorium to conduct research and environmental studies. The Morgan County board has indicated that a six month moratorium is in place, discussed at the end of April.
The Morgan County board is expected to take up the matter in October, when a proposal for the board is expected to be presented.
