Early Morning Fire Destroys McClelland Dining Hall Kitchen

Portions of a historic piece of the former MacMurray campus are a total loss after fire tore through one of the buildings early this morning.

The Jacksonville and South Jacksonville Fire Departments were called to Cured Catering located inside of the former McClelland Dining Hall at 438 East College Avenue for a structure fire just before 5 o’clock this morning.

Jacksonville Fire Department Captain Matt Leischner says the east side of the building was fully involved with fire when crews arrived. “When we pulled up there was fire blowing out of the roof in the middle of the building.”

We made entry through this [area] which was a door they had turned into a window. We broke through that window and started our attack here in the middle to try and keep the fire contained to the east and not going into the dining room.”

Leischner says no one was injured and the dining hall is likely savable, however, the kitchen portion of the structure is a total loss and will likely need to be raised. The fire did not reach the dining hall itself although it did sustain heavy smoke and water damage from fire suppression efforts.

Leischner said at one point the foam soundproofing in the ceiling of the hall began to smolder and crews had to soak the area with water to prevent a potential further ignition.

Upon initial investigation, Leischner says nothing suspicious is believed to be behind the cause of the fire, however, the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to assist with determining the cause due to the commercial losses.

The historic dining hall was built in 1929, with a number of additions added to the kitchen side over the years as it served as the main kitchen and cafeteria for MacMurray College up until its closure in May 2020.

The hall was later purchased by local developer Mike Hayes and has been the home to Cured Catering. Brian and Melissa Reilly, owners of Cured Catering say they catered an event last night, and the last employee locked up and left at approximately 10:15 pm.

They say they are thankful that no one was injured and are now in the process of contacting wedding parties that had the hall booked for receptions this summer. The couple says they have also begun to contact other entities to help find space for those events to take place, as well as possible alternatives for kitchen space. Cured Catering has used the McClelland Dining Hall as their sole operations kitchen for a number of years.

The fire fully engulfed the kitchen portion of the building causing the roof to collapse into the structure. No estimate of damages was available as of press time, but officials say the kitchen portion of the building is a total loss.

Rotary Ferris Wheel Season Starts Sunday

A Jacksonville icon returns to action this weekend.

The Jacksonville Rotary Club opens its 2024 summer schedule for rides on the Big Eli Ferris Wheel Number 17 on Sunday. Ferris Wheel Committee Chair Gina Hayes says the Rotary has maintained the wheel at its current location in Community Park for more than thirty years.

Big Eli is open for rides that are free to the public each Sunday during the summer season. The rides are free thanks to business sponsors that help support operation of the wheel.

Hayes says the sponsorship and free will donations by riders is what allows the club to keep Big Eli Number 17 spinning each year. “The wheel requires quite a bit of maintenance each year and we also have to pay to get it licensed along with just general upkeep. So the money that we raise through sponsorships and donations goes towards preserving the wheel and saving for upcoming expenses.”

As the name implies, Big Eli Number 17 is the 17th wheel made by W. E. Sullivan’s Big Eli Bridge Company in Jacksonville. It was constructed in 1907 and traveled the country before returning home to Jacksonville in the 1950s when the Rotary Club purchased the wheel and ran it at Nichols Park until 1985.

Hayes says it is a labor of love for the group to keep the 117-year-old wheel operating for the community at large to enjoy. “It’s very much an icon of our community. We get a lot of people out each Sunday, it’s so much fun, it’s family-friendly and it’s all ages. Kids do need to be thirty-six inches tall or taller to ride. We get young kids, we get older people, we even get people coming from other states so it really is a special place.”

Hayes says the group will also continue to open the wheel for rides during special events throughout the season. This month the wheel will be running during the Summerfest and Health Fair on Wednesday, June 12th, and again on the following Wednesday when Big Eli Number 17 will be running during the annual Jacksonville Juneteenth Celebration on June 19th.

The Jacksonville Rotary Big Eli Ferris Wheel Number 17 is open for free rides every Sunday from 4 to 6 pm. For more information on the Rotary Club of Jacksonville, go to the Rotary Club of Jacksonville Number 3227 on Facebook.

City Wide Yard Sale Returns for Holiday Weekend

One of Central Illinois’ largest resale events returns to Jacksonville this weekend.

The Jacksonville City Wide Yard Sale returns during the Memorial Day Weekend. Organizer of the event, Ward 1 Alderwoman Eren Williams says last Sunday was the cut-off date to get your address in the paper, however, there will be several unlisted garage sales where everyone can find something for anyone.

So far we’re at one hundred and twelve addresses that will be published, but there will be many more that are not listed in the address lineup. Probably about a dozen people have called me since the cutoff date, and I told them there is going to be so many people in Jacksonville to go ahead and have it anyway.”

Williams says the annual Memorial Day Weekend Jacksonville City-Wide Yard Sale is one of if not the largest city-wide sale in Central Illinois, with sales happening in both Jacksonville and South Jacksonville, and beyond.

There are actually a few that I’ve taken addresses for that are outside of town. They’re still Jacksonville, but there is going to be a lot going on that weekend. But we have plenty of hotels, plenty of stores, and little shops. There is free wifi around town. You can go to Central Park and even Walmart has free wifi so if you need to look up addresses, it can be pretty simple.”

Willams says shoppers from both inside and outside of town will have easy access to find all the listed addresses for the sale. “You can find the addresses published in the Journal-Courier Friday and I believe in the weekend edition as well, and also in The Source this week.

We always put the addresses everywhere online so people can screenshot it if you want to do it that way or pick up a paper. But hopefully, everybody shares this information so we can get as many people from outside of town into Jacksonville as possible because this is really good for tourism.”

The Jacksonville City Wide Yard Sale loosely runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with suggested times of 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, look up the Jacksonville City Wide Yard Sale event on Facebook.

Twisted Tree Welcomes First International Performer Tonight with Cicso Dragon

A Jacksonville entertainment venue is hosting its first internationally touring artist this weekend.

Singer and guitarist Cisco Dragon kicked off his U.S. tour this week and will take the stage tonight at the Twisted Tree Music Hall in Jacksonville.

Dragon, who is a highly sought-after talent from Cozumel, Mexico, has toured both in the U.S. and Europe and will be playing ten shows in two weeks throughout Illinois, with one stop at the Lake of the Ozarks next weekend.

Dragon says he was first inspired to pick up a guitar by his cousins when he was a young boy living in Mexico City. He cites a wide array of early influences from his older sister which included The Spin Doctors, and The Counting Crows, to Radiohead and Metalica.

He started out as a street performer and says he was influenced further by American tourists as he discovered classic rock, as well as country artists like Johnny Cash and others.

Then I had a chance to play in a little bar, and bars like that. I started playing shows and learning music that would attract tourists. I can play anything from country music to Pink Floyd to Latin jazz. Now I can play Brazilian music and a little bit of Italian music as well. I’ve been touring in Europe in previous years. So I like to deliver a wide variety of genres and artists.”

Dragon plays both original music and cover songs from a diverse selection of genres and styles. He says he is mostly looking forward to meeting and connecting with people from the Jacksonville area community.

I like to deliver a good quality of music. Different styles and I will be doing different kinds of songs for all different people. Just delivering positivity- that’s my thing you know. Just happy positive music and enjoying connecting with people from here.”

The show kicks off at 7:00 pm at the Twisted Tree Music Hall located at 1061 East Morton Avenue. A $5.00 donation is requested, but not required to take in the show.

Cicso Dragon will be back in Jacksonville at the end of the month for performances at The Hangout Bar and Grill on May 30th, Pizza Records on May 31st ahead of the first downtown concert series show, and then at Dons Place on June 1st.

Pratt Selected to Fill Adrian Eighth Circuit Bench Vacancy in Adams County

An Adams County attorney is on the move again now that the State Supreme Court has voted to fill a seat on the bench it vacated earlier this year.

Muddy River News is reporting that the newly appointed Chief Public Defender for Adams County, Christopher Pratt has been tapped as the new at-large Circuit Judge for the Eighth Judicial Circuit.

The seat became open after the Illinois Courts Commission removed former judge Robert Adrian from the bench in a ruling handed down in February of this year.

The commission ruled that the Judicial Inquiry Board proved “by clear and convincing evidence” that Adrian gave untruthful testimony before the Board constituting “willful misconduct” in his handling of the Drew Clinton case in January 2022.

Adrian found then-18-year-old Drew Clinton guilty of felony criminal sexual assault following a three-day bench trial in October 2021. Then, on Jan. 3, 2022, Adrian vacated the decision saying that the time that Clinton had already spent in jail was enough of a punishment, resulting in Clinton being released from jail.

The Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board filed a complaint on June 17, 2022, against Adrian alleging he had circumvented the law by vacating his verdict and refusing to impose a mandatory sentence.

The ruling also found Adrian couldn’t be an impartial justice after he had removed Assistant Adams County State’s Attorney Josh Jones from his courtroom after Jones had liked a comment critical of Adrian’s decision to vacate the conviction on social media, and that Adrian made statements he knew to be false while testifying under oath before the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board on April 8, 2022.

Pratt has served in the Public Defender’s Office as Deputy Public Defender since 2016. He was promoted to Chief Defender back in February following the resignation of Todd Nelson.

Pratt’s appointment is effective June 10 and will conclude on Dec. 7, 2026, after the November 2026 general election.
